I was recently mulling over where on the Medicine Wheel does the energy of relationships lie and how can we use the energies or Medicine of the Wheel to nurture good relationships. This line of thought and deep contemplation started with planning to celebrate Mothers’ Day. This led to thoughts about Mother Earth and Grandmothers. Relationships. Kenneth Meadows, author of Earth Medicine, writes that there are 4 kinds of Love that rise out of Divine Love. The four kinds of Love are: Earth – physical (attraction); Water – Sexual Love (the urge to merge); Air – Platonic Love (Brother/Sisterhood); and Fire – True Love (Spiritual Love, Selfless).
Loren Cruden, author of Compass of the Heart, writes about relationships as Alliances with all life in both Ordinary and Non-ordinary worlds. She writes that our primary way to learn about relationships is to delve into our relationships with our Power Animals as this relationship will mirror or be symbolized in our Ordinary world, our everyday lives. As we learn about our relationship to our Power Animals we expand our awareness and deeply look at ourselves. We examine our thoughts, our beliefs and our emotions around these beliefs. In essence we begin to know our self on much deeper levels. As we know ourselves better, our relationships improve or dissolve. Loren states, “you can’t make peace out in the world and war at home”. Very profound on so many levels.
Loren puts relationships in the South as the work begins with Fire as we transmute our beliefs and uncover our truths and our true self. We then take our truths and true self on the Good Road to the North, to our community. In the community we begin to expand our awareness of our self into our community, into relationship with others. We begin to nurture our relationship to others. As we know ourselves better and deeper we can feel our connection to others through our similarities and focus on those rather than focusing on our differences. “We are more similar than dissimilar.” says Dr. Maya Angelo. We become the conduit for Love and enter the realm of Spiritual Maturity.
