The month of October is due West on the Medicine Wheel. In the West lies the Spirit of Emotions, the Spirit of Water. The West energies are about the setting sun, the beginning of reflection and introspection, gathering the lasts of the harvests, listening and the end of the Black Road. The West for me is about the drum and altered states. The time of betweeness as the sunsets we experience Early Evening Nautical Twilight. The Thunder Beings reside in the west and the West for me carries Female energy. I find the totem energy in the West to be Elk. My preference for drum making hide is Elk and this is the time of year that the Elk are mating. The Platonic Solid that represents the West is the Icosahedron (water). The Potawatomi call the month of October, Autumn Moon, for the falling leaves.
You can harness the energy of the West and October by finding some quiet time to listen to the sounds of early evening. This time of year could be about raking up those fallen leaves to compost for next springs gardens or to put your garden to bed for the season. You may want to take some time to experience the betweeness through meditation or shamanic journey through riding the beat of the drum.
Happy Falling Leaves Moon.
