So many of you know how much my life, both personal and professional, has shifted over the last few months. I have taken some time to step back from active teaching and traveling to teach because my Mom needs me home with her.
This past weekend, I had the pleasure and honor to teach a family member to make a sacred drum. My niece made her first sacred elk drum. In our culture, a niece, my brother’s daughter, is also my daughter. So, it was fun and deeply moving to be the one to initiate my daughter to the art and sacredness of drum making.
Sharing the experience of making a sacred drum with a daughter is very special. She has learned the stories, the ceremony and the meditations. The passing on of these sacred tenets is important for both the ancestors and the descendents because as we share these tenets we are in the past, present and future all at once, Big Medicine.
